Logs of my adventures with my XBOX including troubleshooting and various tweaks and guides. This is mainly to help me should I have a similar problem arise several months from now...
Since I just recently filled my XBOX HD (160 gigs) and I've copied over lots of files: emulators, movies etc. I've thought about defragging it. I'm not sure if the linux distros that have been ported allow the xbox to be defragged. I tried Googling for utilities and information:
Groovy Web Has some information on emulators and a link to a defragger but I don't trust it.
TechSupportForum.com I think is complete BS as the XBOX HD uses FATX.
XboxAddict.comMust be referencing the same article above.
Xbox-Emulation.co.uk States that defragging isn't needed due to how the drive is partitioned.
I'll do some more digging later. As far as I know it does NOT defrag on the fly and I haven't found any apps that do it yet. The only way I can really see improving a fragmented drive is to wipe it. Not really practical but I do know that Microsoft has a disc that is available that "refreshes" the XBOX.
Update 4/08/07
Update 3/31/08
Since several souls have come across this blog searching for xbox defrag information I figured I would revisit the topic. To date there is no public tool if one exists. A group began but never completed a working defragger.
An explanation of how fragmentation occurs can be found here. Take some of the responses with a grain of salt. Team Aavalaunch was said to have begun work on an xbox defragmenter however it was never completed. An interview with Team Avalaunch that mentions a defragger can be found here. A news post containing updates on the progress of the xbox defragger by Team Avalaunch. If you don't feel like visiting the site I have included the most interesting portion of it below. This was posted on June 1 2003:
The defrag class is already made and it has loaded all the info it needs. Now we just gotta make sure noone looses all info on their drives hehehehe
And yea.... don't expect this feature in 0.46, we're wanting 0.46 out now - so new features is pushed a bit back. But for 0.47 this will be a high priority, now that we see how things are set up.
Avalaunch Dashboard info can be found here (wiki).
If your xbox hd is fragmented and noticably performing slower the only method available to you is to copy all the files off of the xbox hd and copy them back over.
Information on the structure of FATX (the filesystem that the Xbox HDs use) can be found here. FATX Support in Linux limited to kernel 2.4 (which is unmaintained) and is not present in 2.6.
